Bain Capital Participates in City Year MLK Service Day

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, City Year Boston hosted a service day in which 9 Bain Capital employees participated.

City Year Boston currently deploys 265 corps members to serve in 21 Boston Public Schools to provide students with the academic and social support that they need to meet their full potential.

City Year Boston knows that students don't exist in the isolation of a school building. To fully support their students, corps members also need to support the communities where they live, play and spend their days.

With that in mind, this 2017 MLK Day service event focused on supporting the schools, community centers, and housing developments that surround MLK Boulevard in the heart of Roxbury. Volunteers packed school supply and hygiene kits, created fleece hats and blankets, painted murals and made mosaics.

"We all are familiar with Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, but it would be a shame to think his fight was simply for the end of racial segregation. We cannot forget that he also said this: "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'" It was an honor to be able to spend this day serving others.

"I worked with a team using colored duct tape to reinforce large plastic zipper bags for hygiene kits for the Elizabeth Stone House women's shelter. We used the colors to create fun designs, and we wrote encouraging notes to include with the kits. While it was a small part of the overall project, the enthusiasm of the City Year staff was infectious, and it felt good to give a little bit back and to see & hear stories from City Year staff & volunteers."

"I worked on a project that was creating care packages and making fleece blankets for the Elizabeth Stone House women's shelter. During my shift, we focused on making blankets. The experience was really positive for me. I felt happy that I went and was able to contribute and hopefully make somebody else's day a little better."
