Mr. Doherty joined Bain Capital in 2005 as the firm's first General Counsel. He was a Managing Director and retired at the end of 2018. He now serves as a Senior Advisor to the firm.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Doherty worked at Ropes & Gray LLP and was a law clerk to a federal district judge in Boston. Prior to law school, he was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, in which he served on a Middle East Force frigate from 1990-94. Mr. Doherty is a member of the International Board of Directors of JDRF, the global leader in funding type 1 diabetes research, and is Founder and Executive Chairman of the JDRF T1D Fund, its venture philanthropy vehicle. He is a trustee of Thayer Academy.
Mr. Doherty received a JD magna cum laude from Harvard Law School and a BA magna cum laude from Harvard College.
